Current Programs: How OTC Is Making a Difference

Off the Curb, Inc. is dedicated to inspiring people through education and access to keep furniture off the curb and out of landfills. We’re excited to offer the following programs as part of our Spring 2020 launch.

4 STAGES Awareness

There are dozens of charities, organizations, businesses, and individuals in the Pittsburgh area that share Off the Curb’s belief that unwanted furniture is still valuable to someone. The 4 Stages Awareness Program strives to educate area individuals about the alternatives to throwing away unwanted furniture. Those alternatives include repairing, repurposing, reusing and recycling. This program includes referral database creation for each stage, social media outreach, and—eventually—workshops and learning events in targeted neighborhoods. Currently a “reuse” database is available for download, featuring Pittsburgh organizations and businesses that accept unwanted furniture.

Pilot Furniture Rescue Program

Whether you’re buying or selling a home, it’s a hectic time. When you’re packing and unpacking, a lot of stuff ends up on the curb and out for trash pickup. We’d like to make sure that stuff doesn’t include furniture. That’s why Off the Curb, inc. is partnering with select realtors in Pittsburgh’s South Hills to give home buyers and sellers an easy alternative to the landfill. Our pilot furniture rescue program operates two Saturdays out of every month. Collected furniture is either sold to further OTC’s mission, donated to local charities based on their current needs, placed with a local furniture expert/artist for repair and/or repurposing, or disassembled and parts recycled in order to severely decrease waste.
